Tips for your first driving lesson

There are a few simple things that new learners can do before they start their lessons that will help to make them feel more comfortable and confident on their first lessons:

1. Make sure you have a provisional licence that is in date and has the correct details on it.

2. Start to read the Highway Code. These sections will be very helpful to get you familiar with the rules of the road before your first lesson:
• Rules for drivers and motorcyclists
• General rules, techniques and advice for all drivers and riders
• Using the road
• Traffic Signs

3. When you are travelling in a car pay attention to what the driver is doing and where they are looking.

4. Have a look around a car and find out what the different controls and buttons do. Pay attention to the symbols used for the controls and buttons as these are very similar on all cars.

5. Think of some questions to ask about anything that may be worrying you or about anything that you are unsure of that you have read in the Highway Code. Remember that there is no such thing as a silly question if you do not know the answer.
