Show me, Tell me Questions

At the beginning of the driving test the examiner will ask you two questions. You will be asked one question where you will have to show the examiner something about the car and another question where you will have to tell the examiner something about the car.
If you are unable to answer a question correctly one minor fault will be recorded per question
(maximum of two minors).

Q1. Open the bonnet and identify where you would check the engine oil level and tell me how you check that the engine has sufficient oil.
Identify the dip stick. Explain how to check the oil level against the minimum and maximum markers. (Pull the dip stick out, wipe it, put it back in, pull it out and check the oil level against the markers.)

Q2. Open the bonnet and identify where the windscreen washer reservoir is and tell me how you would check the windscreen washer fluid level.
Identify the windscreen washer reservoir and explain how to check the level.

Q3. Open the bonnet and identify where you would check the engine coolant level and tell me how you would check that the engine has the correct coolant level.
Identify the engine coolant container and explain that the fluid level should be between the minimum and maximum markers.

Q4. Open the bonnet and identify where the brake fluid reservoir is and tell me how you would check the brake fluid level.
Identify the reservoir and check the brake fluid level against the minimum and maximum markers.

Q5. Show me how you would check that the brake lights are working on this car? (I can assist you if necessary)
Use the brake pedal. Make use of reflections or ask someone to help. (Switch the ignition on if necessary but don't start the engine)

Q6. Show me how you would check the direction indicators are working?
Use the indicators or hazard warning lights. Walk around the car checking all lights are functioning. (You may need to turn on the ignition but do not start the engine.)

Q7. Show me how you would switch on the rear fog lights and explain when you would use them.
Operate the switch (turn on dipped headlights and ignition if necessary). Check the warning light is on. Explain when to use them.

Q8. Show me how you would switch your headlights from dipped to main beam and explain how you would know the main beam is on whilst inside the car.
Operate the control. The main beam warning light will be on when main beam is being used.

Q9. Show me / explain how you would check that the power assisted steering is working before starting a journey?
Before starting a journey two simple checks can be made. Apply pressure to the wheel while starting the engine. You should feel the steering go from heavy to light. Alternatively turn the wheel just after moving away and the steering should feel light. If the steering becomes heavy then there could be a problem with the system.

Q10. Show me how you would check the parking brake (hand brake) for excessive wear? Make sure you keep safe control of the vehicle.
Apply the foot brake firmly. Use the parking brake (hand brake) checking that when it is fully applied it is not at the end of its working travel and holds the car securely.

Q11. Show me how you would check that the horn is working. (Off road only)
Use the horn. (Turn on ignition if necessary)

Q12. Show me how you would clean the windscreen using the windscreen washers and wipers.
Use the control to wash and wipe the windscreen. (Turn on the ignition if necessary)

Q13. Show me how you would set the demister controls to clear all the windows effectively. This should include both the front and rear screens.
Set all the relevant controls - fan, temperature, air direction / source and heated screen to clear the windscreen and windows. The engine does not have to be started for this demonstration.

Q14. Tell me how you would check that the headlights and tail lights are working.
Operate the switch to turn on the lights then walk around the vehicle to check all lights are working.

Q15. Tell me how you would check that the brakes are working before starting a journey?
Test the brakes as you set off. The brakes should not feel spongy or slack. The vehicle should not pull to one side.

Q16. Tell me where you would find the information for the recommended tyre pressures for this car and how the tyre pressures should be checked?
Look in the handbook for the recommended pressures. Use a reliable pressure gauge. Check and adjust the tyre pressures when they are cold. Remember to check the spare tyre. Remember to refit the valve caps.

Q17. Tell me how you would check the tyres to ensure that they have sufficient tread depth and that their general condition is safe to use on the road.
There should be no cuts, bulges or damage to the tyre. The tread should be at least 1.6mm deep across the whole tyre and the tread should be wearing evenly.

Q18. Tell me how you would make sure your head restraint is correctly adjusted so it provides the best protection in the event of a crash.
The head restraint should be adjusted so the rigid part of the head restraint is at least as high as the eye or top of the ears and as close to the back of the head as is comfortable.

Q19. Tell me how you would know if there was a problem with the anti lock braking system.
The warning light will illuminate if there is a fault with the anti lock braking system.
